Walking The Pennine Way
Hay resident, writer and broadcaster Barry Pilton, will talk about his 21-day trek along the Pennine Way.  It originally started as a series of talks on Radio 4 and then was published in 1986 as One Man and His Bog  (subtitled The Reluctant Rambler’s Guide to Walking the Pennine Way). The book opens with an Author’s Note: “If this book should in some small way encourage people to take up walking themselves, then the author suggests they read the book again more carefully”.

Cycling to Santiago de Compostela
Everyone has heard of the Camino de Santiago, the Way of St James, a famous pilgrim route traversing northern Spain. But did you know around 10% of all pilgrims reaching Santiago are ‘bicigrinos’, bike-pilgrims? Nearly 25,000 bicigrinos receive their Compostela certificate each year. One such pilgrim pedaller was another local man, Pete Ward, who works for the Hay Festival.  He will talk of the trials and tribulations, the punctures and people he met along the way and his feelings of accomplishment on arrival at Santiago.

Horsing Around in Mongolia
In 2017 local dairy farmer, Paul Richards, was tempted by the Mongol Derby. This feat of equestrian endurance involved racing 1020 kilometres across the Mongolian desert with 42 other people – 29 of them women- using 1300 horses, a backup crew of 100 people, 8 vets, a doctor and 4 paramedics. Paul, who thought initially he was too old at 59 and nowhere near fit enough, now believes the race changed his life forever!  He was ready & willing to “go the extra mile” to raise money for his chosen charity, Children’s Hospice South West – “No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle” (Winston Churchill).

The hotel bar will be open throughout for refreshments and there will be an there will be an opportunity for questions after the speakers have delivered their talks.
